Magnetic reconnection—the sudden rearrangement of magnetic field lines—drives dramatic energy releases in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. Solar flares, tokamak disruptions, and magnetospheric substorms all hinge on reconnection. These events—uncontrolled, destructive—becoming survives.
